As a locally owned business that’s committed to getting people outdoors, we think it’s important to support brands that are doing good for the environment and our society as a whole. Our newest line of jewelry, Swahili Coast, is a powerhouse of social change.

Why We Love Them

Power over pity – Swahili Coast’s three word mission statement says it all. This brand is committed to fighting poverty in a manner that dignifies and empowers. They develop opportunities for women in East Africa to make a fair wage creating jewelry and traditional East African bead craft. The results are stunning pieces of jewelry and changed lives.

Their U.S. headquarters are right here in North Carolina, so you can also feel good about supporting our local economy.

As a locally owned business that’s committed to getting people outdoors, we think it’s important to support brands that are doing good for the environment and our society as a whole. One brand we’re excited to support is Half United.

Why We Love Them

Over 840 million people go to bed hungry each night. Of those, 13.1 million are children right here in the U.S. For every item sold, Half United provides 7 meals to feed children locally and globally. They also work to fight one of the root causes of hunger in developing countries, unemployment, by employing Haitian artisans to make some of their jewelry.

Beyond the good they’re accomplishing, we’re huge fans of their classic minimalist jewelry. It’s beautiful, practical, well-made, and matches everything. Oh, and did we mention that they’re an N.C. brand? They’re headquartered in Wilmington.

As a locally owned business that’s committed to getting people outdoors, we think it’s important to support brands that are doing good for the environment and our society as a whole. That’s why we’re super excited about an inspirational mother-daughter brand – The Happy Sea

Why We Love Them

Inspired by their love of the ocean, Owyn and Laurie wanted to do something to care for this vital eco-system. When Owyn discovered she wasn’t cut out for marine biology, she decided to make an impact in a different way, her art. Not only are her designs beautiful and super fun, but a portion of the sales goes to benefit non-profits that help conserve our oceans, like Orca Conservancy, Ocean Alliance, and Sea-to-Shore.

All of The Happy Sea’s stickers are made in the USA, cutting down on their carbon footprint.

As a locally owned business that’s committed to getting people outdoors, we think it’s important to support brands that are doing good for the environment and our society as a whole. Today, we’re shining light on one such brand – Mona B.

Why We Love Them

Recycling is great, but did you know that upcycling is better? Upcycling refers to the practice of reworking materials that would otherwise go to waste. These could be remnants from the manufacturing process, surplus goods, or items that have been used, but still have plenty of life left in their materials. Since these materials require less processing, it’s much less energy intensive than recycling.

Mona B makes stylish and durable bags out of upcycled military canvas. This process diverts tons of garbage from landfills and eliminates the need to manufacture virgin textiles. They also practice zero-waste manufacturing – every scrap of material is repurposed into accents and trim. As a bonus, cutting waste saves money, making these bags available to you at a lower cost.
