New at DBO: Bamboo (It’s Not Just for Pandas Anymore)

Those of us who love the outdoors tend to expect a lot from our clothing. We play hard, so we need clothing that breathes, wicks, insulates, and is virtually indestructible, all while looking good. To live up to our rather high standards, a great fiber is essential. The choice generally comes down to two options: merino or synthetic. But a newcomer to the outdoor world, Free Fly, has us rethinking these traditional options in favor of bamboo. That’s right, the giant grass most often thought of as a panda’s favorite nosh, is hitting the outdoor world in a huge way.

Why bamboo? For starters, it’s eco-friendly. Bamboo is a sustainable crop that takes up very little ground area, prevents erosion, and requires no pesticides or irrigation. It’s also naturally moisture wicking, provides UV protection, doesn’t trap odors, and is softer than a baby bunny. Our testers found it to be very breathable (think more breathable than cotton and still awesome at handling moisture) and loved it for strenuous activity, even on the hottest of days. We also love the price point- all of the products we tested were priced similarly to comparable synthetic items and considerably lower than their merino competitors. Intrigued? Check out our testers’ top picks:

Women's Racerback Tank

Women’s Bamboo Racerback Tank: $29

Even the best fiber can’t save a poor fit; this well constructed tank masters both fit an fabric. Bamboo viscose is blended with just enough stretch to make the tank supremely comfortable, while the cut is loose enough to stay in place and fitted enough to be flattering.

Men’s Bamboo Polo: $49.95

Ready for work or a hike, this classic cut means you can stay cool anywhere.

Women’s Bamboo Fleece: $79.95

Just when we thought fleece couldn’t get any better, Free Fly turned ultra soft bamboo into a cozy hoody. The addition of thumb holes makes it the perfect way to stay warm on cool evenings.

Men’s Breeze Shorts: $49.95

The classic active short gets an upgrade. These lightweight shorts feature a soft bamboo blend lining for comfort and moisture management.

New at DBO: Harness the Power of the Sun

Remember the good old days when outdoor adventure meant unplugging? For modern adventurers, electronics are an essential piece of kit. From safety to convenience, having powered up electronics is a good idea. Think keeping in touch with loved ones on a thru hike, keeping your electronics available when traveling, or having the ability to get emergency help on wilderness treks. One of our favorite brands for portable power, Goal Zero, has made what was once an expensive luxury, an affordable essential- our new arrivals from them start at just $24.95.

How it works

Goal Zero products fall into two categories: power collection and power storage. Power storage devices can be used on their own for shorter trips or paired with solar panels for unlimited power collection.

Flip 10

Flip 10

If you’re new to the world of portable power, the pocket sized Flip 10 is the perfect introduction. It’s compact size makes it easy to throw in your pocket or purse for everyday recharging. It stores enough power to recharge a smartphone once in between charging, making it a great source of power for backcountry trips where you want to get away from it all, but still have power in case of an emergency.

Venture 30 Solar Charging Kit

Venture 30 Kit

This combo combines the Venture 30 Recharger with the Nomad 7 Solar Panel (also available separately) The IPX6 weatherproof rated Venture 30 can stand up to the elements, and sports enough power to recharge your smartphone 3 times or give your laptop some serious juice. The Nomad 7 solar panel can easily clip to the back of your pack to recharge the Venture anywhere with sun. This combo is the perfect way to keep you powered up without bulk.

Yeti 150 Solar Generator

The fume free way to keep the power coming in any situation. The Yeti 150 can power laptops, smartphones, and lighting with ease, and can easily be recharged at home or in the wilderness with optional solar panels.

New at DBO: Breezy Packs for Warm Weather Adventures

Our DBO team loves to play outside year round, so we know that nothing can bring your enjoyment of a warm weather hike to a halt faster than a sweat-inducing pack sticking to your back. That’s why we love the new trend in pack technology of developing supportive packs with ample mesh venting. You’ve probably seen quite a few brands adopt this very comfortable breezy style, but we think it’s still done best by the brand that pioneered it – Deuter. This staff favorite brand is also known for its budget friendly price point, great warranty, and feature rich design. Here’s a few of our favorites from this solid outdoor brand.

ACT Lite 45+10 SL (Women’s) & ACT Lite 50+10 (Men’s)

We love the versatility of the ACT Lite Series packs. At 45 and 50 liters, they’re the perfect size for lightweight backpacking lovers. But for winter backpacking (or those trips where you just need a little extra space) the adjustable lid gives you the ability to easily extend your pack an additional 10 liters. We also love the Aircontact Back System which uses mesh along with breathable hollow chamber foam to provide back contouring support, while keeping you dry.

Futura Pro 34 SL (Women’s) & Futura Pro 36 (Men’s)

The perfect size for a more gear-intensive day hike, a lightweight overnight the Futura series has quickly become a staff favorite. New at DBO: Top Backpacking Picks

MSR Carbon Reflex 1

If you’re an avid backpacker, you’ve probably owned or dreamed of owning at least one MSR tent. They’re the masters of lightweight livability and their durability is unbeatable. If you’re into lightweight (and we mean REALLY lightweight), you’ve got to check out the redesigned Carbon Reflex 1. Weighing in at a skinny 1lb 7oz and compressing to nearly water bottle size, it’s so lightweight and compact that you might forget that you’re carrying it. But what really impresses us about the Carbon Reflex 1, is its livability. Most tent makers skimp on space to save weight, but not MSR. At 17 square feet, this ultralight shelter is just 1 square foot smaller than MSR’s iconic Hubba, but weighs nearly a pound less. Check it out here.

Osprey Atmos & Aura AG

One of the classic gear upgrade mistakes is getting an ultralight pack without getting the ultralight gear to go along with it. The truth is, most ultralight packs skimp in the frame department, which is fine if you’re committed to shaving every extra ounce. But for most backpacking enthusiasts, a slightly heavier pack with a more robust frame will actually feel lighter when loaded, because your weight will be more efficiently distributed. We think that the Atmos (men’s) and Aura (women’s) offer a perfect balance between weight and support. Weighing in around 4lbs (weight varies by size), it’s a good pound lighter than many packs on the market. We are also huge fans of the Anti-Gravity suspension, this super supportive mesh wraps all the contact points on the pack, giving you awesome ventilation, creating a custom fit, and eliminating pressure points.Check them out here.

Big Agnes Superlite Q-Core

Sleep- nothing can make or break your adventure quite like it. Thankfully, Big Agnes has mastered ultralight comfort. The Superlite Q-Core is as comfortable as a full size air mattress, inflates with just a few breaths, and weighs in at just 1 lb. Check it out here.

Therm-A-Rest Vela HD Quilt

The best way to shave weight (and gain comfort) in warmer weather? Ditch the bag! Down camp quilts are taking off in a big way and can see why. We love how they provide real bed comfort and just the right amount of warmth, without bringing along more weight than you need. The Vela HD is loaded with clever features like side baffles, to keep you draft-free and an elasticized footbox, to keep your comforter in place. It’s also available in a double size, if you’re feeling snuggly. Check it out here.

Big Agnes Big House 6 Tent

Nothing plays as much of a role in keeping the family happy as making sure that everyone has plenty of space. One of our favorite tents for the job is the Big House 6. This spacious tent is simple to set up and has 6’ tall ceilings to make camping comfortable, even if foul weather takes the party inside. We also love the abundance of storage pockets to keep flashlights and other essentials handy.

New at DBO: Shoulder Season Hiking Favs

The sunny spring temps had us itching for a hike this weekend, but if you’ve lived in WNC for any length of time, you know the weather can be unpredictable- especially when you head up in the mountains. This can make deciding what to wear on a spring hike quite a conundrum. To demystify the art of clothing selection, we’ve picked a few of our favorite pieces for shoulder season hiking from our fresh springtime shipment from Mountain Hardwear that just landed at DBO.

Plasmic Ion Jacket (Men’s & Women’s)

Rainy days are some of our favorite times to hike. The trails are empty and peaceful and let’s be honest, you feel pretty hardcore hiking in conditions that would keep lesser outdoors-people inside. But to enjoy the experience, it helps to be prepared. A good rain shell is lightweight and easy to throw in your pack. It also makes a great layer when high elevations are chillier than anticipated (bonus: most rain shells are also windproof). The Plasmic Ion Jacket is a great no-frills rain jacket that proves that you don’t have to spend bank for a rain jacket that will be both durable and breathable.

Dynama Pant (Women’s)

Yoga pants are fantastic. They’re stretchy, comfy, and the soft waistband means no chafing when worn under a pack. Wearing them for hiking is pretty darn tempting, but then there are the cons: that material is not made to hold up to brambles and briars and the lack of pockets is rather inconvenient. Thankfully, Mountain Hardwear has come up with the perfect solution: The Dynama Pant. The Dynama is a long pant with draw cords that allow you to shorten the length for puddle jumping or ventilation. Our favorite features? It has a soft yoga pant style waistband for a chafe free adventure and the stretchy technical fabric can hold to rock scrambling and bushwhacking. We also have it in a skirt, a short, and a capri, to keep you comfy all season long.

Canyon Long Sleeve Shirt (Men’s & Women’s)

Sometimes on a chilly day, having just a little bit of coverage makes all the difference. That’s why a lightweight long sleeve is one of our favorite pieces for shoulder season hiking. The Canyon Long Sleeve Shirt has some bonus features that make it one of our favorites. It features back vents to keep you cool, is UPF rated for sun protection, and has tabs to allow you to roll up your sleeves. It also comes in such great colors this season that it will quickly become an everyday favorite.

Pyxis Stretch Vest (Women’s)

For those days when you need just a little something extra a vest is an ideal option. We adore the Pyxis Vest for its lightweight and vibrant colors. It also features a two fabric construction. The lush fleece front feels luxuriant and it’s high-loft gives warmth, while the stretch side panels add breathability and ease of movement and make it easy to layer without being too bulky.
